Hey Everyone, I have updated some pretty hefty info to the right which is Susan Barton the creator of the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Susan shares a lot of info on Dyslexia. I feel so very passionate about dyslexia and if you catch the warning signs of it early on as early as when your child starts to talk that you can prevent a hard time with learning in school.
My biggest beef with anyone with a learning disability is treating it as if the person or child will grow out of it, or it will just go away. No NO NO-- you are only making the situation worse by avoiding the warning signs or just plain being in denial.
Speech delays are my biggest and easiest form of telling if a child will struggle in school. Children with dyslexia usually don't start to speak until they are 2 and sometimes even older. Delayed speech doesn't always mean dyslexia, but a speech delay should always be investigated. It is often the 1st sign that language development isn't occurring as it should. Please parents take the progressing of your child's development more serious then just a shrug of the shoulders.
Here are symptoms in preschoolers:
- Delayed Speech
- Mixing up sounds in syllables- ie, basgetti, aminal
- Chronic ear infections and severe reactions to childhood illnesses
- constant confusion of left versus right
- difficulty learning how to tie shoes
- trouble memorizing address, phone number, or alphabet
- inability to create simple rhymes at age of 4 to 4 & a half
If your child has only one symptom don't worry too much, but the biggest warning sign is a close relative with dyslexia, it is inherited.
Love you hope this info empowers you!
